Three-fourths of Morocco’s healthcare centers do not have fundamental environmental cleaning services, while just 11% satisfy the global benchmark for basic water availability, as per a recent report.World Health Organization and UNICEF publication.

The joint monitoring report by WHO and UNICEF, which tracks developments between 2015 and 2025, offers revised data on Morocco concerning water, sanitation, hygiene, environmental cleanliness, and the handling of medical waste.

According to the report, globally, basic coverage was estimated to be 85% for water, 72% for hygiene, 71% for waste management, 59% for cleaning, and 40% for sanitation services.

Just 9% of Moroccan facilities offer fundamental environmental cleaning, including documented cleaning procedures and properly trained personnel. An additional 15% provide minimal services, whereas 75% do not offer any.

Water availability also remains under the minimum standard. Eleven percent of facilities have access to water from an improved source within the premises, whereas 85% offer restricted access and 4% lack any water supply.

In terms of sanitation, 10% achieve the minimum standard, which includes having functional toilets for staff, women, and individuals with mobility challenges. Limited sanitation is present in 82% of the facilities, while 7% do not have an enhanced service.

The report categorizes 37% of facilities as offering fundamental hygiene services. An additional 46% offer minimal services, while 17% provide no services at all. The measure mandates the presence of working handwashing stations or alcohol-based sanitizer at care areas and close to restrooms.

Medical-waste management showed improvement but was still not fully completed. Thirty-two percent of facilities safely segregate waste and appropriately handle infectious materials and used needles. Fifty-one percent offer limited services, while 16% provide no services at all.

The report indicated that Morocco’s updated figures were lower than previous regional averages, which reduced the overall results for North Africa and Western Asia. WHO and UNICEF associate these services with infection prevention, patient security, and defense against antibiotic resistance.
