Russian attacks during the night on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, and nearby areas resulted in at least 13 deaths and over 30 injuries, according to Ukrainian officials early on Thursday.

Kyiv’s mayor, Vitaliy Klitschko, stated that Moscow had initiated a large-scale ballistic missile attack on the city, with cleanup efforts still in progress. He proposed that Friday be recognized as a day of remembrance.

The strikes affected residential structures, a healthcare center, and a learning establishment, according to a statement from the Kyiv city military administration. Electricity supply in certain areas of the capital was also disrupted.

At minimum, 13 individuals lost their lives in Kyiv, according to officials.

Klitschko mentioned that seven individuals lost their lives in the Solomianskyi district of the city, where a fire occurred and the upper floors of a nine-story residential building were damaged.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia also targeted gas facilities in the northern Chernihiv area and a border checkpoint with Moldova in the southern Odesa region.

“It marked a significant assault — the Russians had been getting ready for an extended period, integrating various kinds of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones, with the goal of inflicting maximum harm to civilian infrastructure,” Zelenskyy stated on social media.

Ukraine has a severe lack of interceptors to destroy ballistic missiles, a vulnerability that Russia has attempted to take advantage of.

The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that it had struck locations manufacturing drone parts, a military storage facility, and a transportation center in the assaults on Kyiv and the surrounding areas.

In nearby Poland, the Polish army stated that it has initiated preventive air force operations to safeguard its airspace due to Russian attacks. The Polish military frequently implements such actions during intense Russian strikes against Ukraine.

In Romania, the Defense Ministry reported that a drone crashed in an unpopulated region of Tulcea during Russian attacks. The ministry mentioned that radar systems identified airborne targets near the Ukrainian border, leading to the deployment of two Spanish fighter jets participating in NATO missions and a Romanian air force helicopter.

A drone also entered Moldova’s airspace, according to the nation’s military.
