Five additional individuals have been taken into custody by investigators looking into the circumstances surrounding the accident on the A66, which resulted in the deaths of two police officers and five other people.
The Cleveland Police verified that the most recent arrests involved a 16-year-old male along with four men who are 18, 21, 23, and 25 years old—bringing the overall number of people arrested to 17.
It follows police statements that five young men, who lost their lives when their vehicle collided with a police car on a dual carriageway, may have been associated with ‘serious and organised criminal activity’.
The five individuals taken into custody today are:
- A 16-year-old male under suspicion of being involved with a criminal organization;
- A 18-year-old individual accused of being part of a criminal organization;
- A 21-year-old individual suspected of being involved with a criminal organization;
- A 55-year-old man is under suspicion for aiding an offender;
- A 23-year-old individual suspected of making threats to commit murder.
After the 12 arrests confirmed yesterday, authorities stated that a 19-year-old individual from Redcar has been charged with carrying a weapon with the intention of causing harm and has appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court today.
A 26-year-old man from Redcar has been charged with having class A and class B drugs with the intention to supply, as well as possessing stolen property. He has been kept in custody and will appear at Teesside Crown Court on September 21.
Twelve individuals held yesterday comprised four who were taken into custody for allegedly being part of a criminal organization and another four suspected of having a weapon.
Four of the individuals under suspicion are also charged with having Class A and B drugs in possession with the intention of distributing them.
The police provided the following information today regarding the 12 individuals detained yesterday:
- A 24-year-old individual was taken into custody for allegedly being part of a criminal organization and for having an offensive weapon, and was later released under certain conditions.
- A 19-year-old man from Redcar has been taken into custody on allegations of being part of an organized criminal group and has since been released under conditional bail. However, he has faced charges related to possessing a weapon with the intention of threatening someone’s life and appeared before Teesside Magistrates Court this morning;
- A 30-year-old female was taken into custody with allegations of aiding an offender and has since been granted conditional bail;
- A 35-year-old man was taken into custody, suspected of being part of a criminal organization and possessing a dangerous weapon, and has since been granted conditional bail.
- A 21-year-old individual was taken into custody, suspected of involvement with a criminal organization, possession of a dangerous weapon, and causing property damage. He has been released under certain conditions. He has since been sent back to prison for further consideration.
- A 20-year-old individual has been taken into custody on charges related to threatening to commit criminal damage and disturbing public order;
- A 61-year-old woman was taken into custody for allegedly having a firearm without proper authorization and has since been released under conditional bail;
- A 47-year-old woman was taken into custody on charges including possession of a firearm without proper authorization, having drugs of class A and B with the intention to supply, and holding drugs of class C, and has since been released under conditional bail;
- A 18-year-old man has been taken into custody on allegations of possessing a weapon without proper authorization, having drugs of class A and class B with the intention to distribute, and holding drugs of class C, and has since been released without any conditions.
- A 39-year-old individual has been taken into custody, accused of holding a weapon without proper authorization, having drugs of class A and B with the intention to distribute, and possessing drugs of class C, and has since been released under certain conditions.
- A 26-year-old man from Micklow Close in Redcar has faced charges related to possessing class A and class B drugs with the intention of supplying them, as well as holding criminal property. He has been kept in custody and is scheduled to appear at Teesside Crown Court on September 21;
- A 39-year-old individual was taken into custody on allegations of making threats to kill and has since been granted conditional bail.
Meanwhile, the Police Federation of England and Wales claimed that young individuals are ‘provoking police officers’ through reckless driving.
Paul Williams, the acting deputy national chairman, said to BBC Breakfast: ‘Each day, we can now spot many instances of young people dramatizing reckless driving. It’s not just reckless driving, but also provoking police officers who are there to safeguard the public.’
It’s a genuine issue. It is raising worries among officers.
They shouldn’t need to leave for their shift and fear whether they’ll make it back home. But in addition, they also have to worry about being widely featured on social media.
It is completely unacceptable, and social media platforms must take some steps.
Four of the five individuals in the vehicle had prior criminal records, and they were thought to be linked to a different car that was observed crashing into buildings earlier that day.
PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, lost their lives when a Volkswagen Passat, which had been chased by officers, was driven in the opposite direction on a dual carriageway close to Middlesbrough and collided with their marked armed response vehicle.
Five individuals in a Volkswagen—Cole Robert Worthy, 17, Theo Rae, 17, Makai Saddington, 18, and 23-year-olds Michael Robert Cahill and Jacob Matusiak—were declared dead at the location in South Bank early Saturday.
Inquiries were scheduled to begin on Thursday morning for the two officers who lost their lives in the A66 accident.
The Teesside Coroner scheduled initial hearings for Pc Blades at 10:00 AM and Pc Clough at 10:10 AM at the Teesside Magistrates’ Court.
A preliminary hearing for Theo Rae is set for 2:05 pm at the same location.
The coroner’s office has not yet announced the dates when the inquest hearings will take place for the remaining four individuals involved in the VW Passat incident.
The force mentioned on the morning of the accident, it received multiple reports about two vehicles being driven recklessly.
The initial vehicle, thought to be a Volvo XC60, was seen crashing into buildings in the Middlesbrough region.
The second car, a Volkswagen Passat, is thought to be linked to the operations of the Volvo.
The police stated that both vehicles were using fake license plates but were detected by automated license plate recognition systems.
The Volvo XC60 mentioned in the early reports has been located and retrieved in Middlesbrough.
Assistant Chief Constable Wayne Fox, who oversees the strategic direction of the inquiry, stated: ‘This has been a rapidly evolving and intricate investigation, with substantial connections to serious and organized crime.
The occurrences of that sorrowful evening will leave a long-lasting and deep effect on the Cleveland region and the areas we aim to safeguard.
We are obligated to address and conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the severe criminal actions that led to this tragic event, and to ensure that everyone accountable faces the consequences of their actions.
Our strong reaction will persist over the coming weeks and months, as we keep addressing those who aim to harm our communities and combat significant organized crime.
Staff and officers throughout Cleveland have demonstrated remarkable strength by keeping up their duties despite the tragedy.
Two of their fellow officers died while working to serve the residents of Cleveland, and although the effect will be felt by our team for many years, they have maintained the highest level of professional conduct.
I am also deeply thankful for the support we have gotten, and keep getting, from the people of Cleveland and our broader police community.
Bouquets placed next to the A66 near the accident location honored the officers who lost their lives.
Over £750,000 has been collected to support the families of two police officers who lost their lives when a Volkswagen Passat, which had been chased by law enforcement, collided with their marked armed response vehicle just moments after the pursuit ended.
A charity event organized by the Cleveland Police Federation stated that the money collected would be divided equally between the two officers’ families, and the federation would keep offering assistance.
The Cleveland Police initiated the pursuit following information about ‘multiple incidents’ connected to a Passat, which triggered an ANPR camera and is thought to have been using fake license plates, according to the investigating watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
PC Blades and PC Clough did not take part in the initial chase, but had been summoned to the scene to help in the search for the Passat.
Family members referred to former Civil Nuclear Constabulary officer Clough as ‘our hero,’ who was ‘constantly serving the public.’
In a statement released by the Cleveland Police, PC Blades’s wife described him as “my cherished husband, my closest friend, and the most dedicated father to our two young sons.”
Messages of remembrance for the five young men were also posted on social media, with several of their friends expressing they “can’t believe it” and feeling “heartbroken” and “speechless.”
Balloon ceremonies have been planned this week in their honor at various places, including South Bank, close to the site of the incident.
A single message, aimed at all five, stated: ‘We all knew him and knew him had hearts of gold and most loyalist lads (sic).’
The Passat they were in was noticed, and an armed response vehicle chased it for nearly seven minutes before the car entered the A66 at South Bank, moving against the direction of traffic.
The police ended the pursuit and kept to the proper side of the road. The Passat collided with Officer Blades and Officer Clough’s car approximately ten seconds after the chase had stopped.
