A venue in St. Petersburg has suddenly canceled planned shows byKanye West.

The artist, known as Ye, was scheduled to hold sold-out shows in the Russian city on October 10 and 11, marking him as the first prominent Western performer to take the stage in Russia since the beginning of the conflict.Ukraine war in 2022.

However, Gazprom Arena stated that grievances were raised in a post about the show’s cancellation, before explaining that no agreement had been signed for the venue’s rental for the performance initially.

The controversial rapper has been criticised in recent years for his antisemitic remarks – including producing a song titled Heil Hitler and selling merchandise with a swastika on it – however has since apologised and is trying to rehabilitate his image.

Opposition has persisted, even in Russia, where a political figure criticized his ‘revolting behavior’.

The arena wrote on InstagramBecause of the issues raised concerning Gazprom Arena’s management of Kanye West’s concert, we officially state that Gazprom Arena was never and is not the organizer of this event.

“The Gazprom Arena” has not entered into any contracts for the stadium rental for the event. There is no such agreement in place. Therefore, the concert cannot be held at our venue,” it stated.

Say Agency, a concert organizer based in Moscow that arranged the event, asked fans to ‘avoid responding to unconfirmed reports or gossip,’ stating that the concert will occur on the scheduled dates.

In a previous message on Telegram, the agency stated they were unaware of the cancellation until they saw Gazprom Arena’s social media update.

The Agency stated, “We found out about [the announcement] through the media at the same time as you did,” and it is “making efforts to reach out to the venue to discover the cause of the post and address the problem.”

In a subsequent post earlier today, the agencywrote: ‘Buddy, we have noticed your inquiries and comprehend your worry about yesterday’s update.

We would like to confirm that the concert has not been canceled. Arrangements are being made as scheduled, and the dates are still posted on the artist’s official website.

The organization shared an image of Ye on Instagram just two days prior, adding that ‘not every statement Kanye West has made is worth being erased!’.

It mentioned: “Many individuals are discussing Kanye at the moment. Several attempt to criticize him for statements he made during challenging periods.”

Vitaly Milonov, a well-known conservative politician, suggested that Ye should sing traditional Russian songs rather than his popular tracks.

In January, Ye expressed regret for his antisemitic comments, explaining that his bipolar condition led him to lose ‘connection with reality’ in a lengthy ad featured in the Wall Street Journal.
