This shift would echo the Republican president’s previous unilateral move through an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

The United States and Canada are involved in a trade conflict, as Canada is set to reveal counteractions on Tuesday.

This refers to the Trump administration imposing 50% tariffs on $20 billion (€17 billion) worth of Canadian products over the weekend, following the collapse of negotiations between the two nations.

“The United States is seriously thinking about renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America, as we don’t anticipate conducting much business with Ontario in the future,” Trump stated in a social media post.

Ontario is Canada’s most populated province and serves as the hub for the nation’s automotive sector.

The tone of communication between the two nations is growing more intense, as Trump urged Canadian officials on Monday to “get in line” or risk facing repercussions “much worse” than the current tariffs.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has blamed Washington for attempting to dominate Canada.

Trump also warned of imposing additional 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, automotive components, and steel, while Carney stated that U.S. trade demands indicated Washington aimed to “undermine our key industries,” such as automobiles, steel, and aluminum.

Canada and the United States maintain one of the globe’s most extensive trade connections, characterized by highly interconnected supply networks spanning automobiles, energy, farming, and industry, which could lead to significant economic consequences for companies and employees on both sides of the border if a long-term trade conflict arises.

Companies and customers find themselves in a precarious position, unsure of the extent to which costs could rise.

Michael Howard II, who runs a furniture company in Warren, Michigan, near Detroit, stated that the tariffs will hinder “our ability to provide for our family, as well as affect our capacity to contribute to our community.”

Howard and his wife launched their business ten years back. They produce and sell a wide range of items, including dining room tables and bookshelves.

Carney mentioned earlier on Monday that Canada might have to stop matching US tariffs on a one-to-one basis and instead implement more specific countermeasures designed to safeguard Canadian workers and companies.

“A mindset at the negotiation table suggesting Canada is a subsidiary of the United States” is “something we won’t tolerate,” Carney stated.
