Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik visited the funeral of Chief Justice Jo Hee-de’s father on the 31st to pay condolences.

According to Cheong Wa Dae, Chief of Staff Kang planned to visit Pohang Sungmo Hospital, where the funeral of Chief Justice Jo’s father was held, to offer condolences that morning. A source from the Supreme Court explained that Chief Justice Jo wished to hold the funeral quietly with family and declined external condolences, but Cheong Wa Dae reportedly decided to send Chief of Staff Kang to honor the deceased and console the bereaved family.

Chief Justice Jo has recently clashed with Cheong Wa Dae over the nomination of a Justice candidate. Cheong Wa Dae demanded a re-nomination after Chief Justice Jo unilaterally submitted a written nomination for Son Bong-kie, Presiding Judge of the Daegu District Court, as a successor to former Justice Rho Tae-ak, citing a lack of prior consultation. However, President Lee Jae Myung reportedly instructed Chief of Staff Kang to personally visit the funeral, emphasizing the need to show respect to the heads of the five branches of state. Cheong Wa Dae also plans to send a floral tribute in President Lee’s name to Chief Justice Jo’s funeral.
