The Democratic Party of Korea announced on the 29th, during a joint hosting of the ‘May 18 Re-examination Discussion Forum’ at the National Assembly, that regarding People Power Party Representative Lee Jin-sook, who sparked controversy, “as soon as the National Assembly Ethics Special Committee is formed, we will deliberate on disciplinary measures and ensure swift action is taken.”
Kim Seong-hoi, the Democratic Party’s floor spokesperson, stated in a written briefing the same day, “Representative Lee Jin-sook shared a video on social media disparaging the 1980 Gwangju Democratic Uprising as ‘almost a riot’ and praised it as ‘the most faithful explanation of May 18.’”
Earlier, on the 26th during a plenary session, a resolution led by the Democratic Party to expel the representative was passed. The representative had held a public discussion titled ‘Re-examining the May 18 Democratization Movement’ at the National Assembly Library on the 13th, where the Democratic Party criticized some participants for claiming, “May 18 was a disturbance in Gwangju.”
The following day, on the 27th, after the resolution passed, Representative Lee posted, “I introduce the most faithful (personal opinion) explanation and commentary on May 18 among recent YouTube broadcasts,” sharing a video.
Kim, the floor spokesperson, described the video as “far-right YouTuber content” and noted, “It shamelessly spewed remarks like, ‘A coup will occur to overthrow President Lee Jae Myung’s regime’ and ‘If Lee Jin-sook is expelled, the October 26, 2026 version will draw near.’”
Kim added, “We cannot help but be shocked by the representative’s actions, which defame South Korea’s democratic history and blatantly spread coup-inciting videos,” and emphasized, “The Democratic Party will hold this representative, who denies South Korea’s democratic history, fully accountable.”
