A public opinion survey released on August 31 showed that President Lee Jae Myung’s approval rating for his state affairs performance has declined for seven consecutive weeks, falling into the 30% range for the first time since his inauguration.

According to results announced by pollster Real Meter, commissioned by Energy Economic Daily, the survey of 2,509 adults nationwide from August 24–28 found that positive evaluations of the president’s performance dropped 1.3 percentage points (p) to 38.9% compared to the previous week. Negative evaluations rose 1.8 percentage points to 58.7%.

Real Meter attributed the decline in the president’s approval rating to “worsening public sentiment over real estate issues, constitutional controversies surrounding the rejection of the Justice nominee’s appointment, public distrust in the police stemming from the Jeju missing persons case, and internal conflicts within the ruling party over remarks by Rhyu Si-min, former Minister of Health and Welfare.”

Party approval ratings were 43.1% for the Democratic Party of Korea and 37.7% for the People Power Party. The Democratic Party rose 1.2 percentage points from the previous week, while the People Power Party increased 0.1 percentage points. The gap between the two parties widened by 1.1 percentage points to 5.4 percentage points, within the margin of error. The results were based on a survey of 1,006 adults nationwide on August 27–28.
