The death toll from the large-scale debris flow and flooding that occurred in Gyirong County, Shigatse City, Xizang (Tibet), China, alongside the major flood in Nepal on August 26, has risen to 7 people. This brings the total death toll from the major flood in Nepal to 586 people.
According to the emergency management authorities in Xizang, as of 1 a.m. on the 29th, the disaster has resulted in 7 deaths and 554 people missing in Gyirong County.
Authorities reported that the disaster occurred after a glacier and rocks collapsed in the Himalayan highlands on August 26, leading to a large-scale flood that developed into a debris flow and engulfed areas of Gyirong County bordering Nepal.
China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that the emergency management authority in Xizang has deployed 2,141 rescue personnel to the site to carry out rescue operations.
Meanwhile, the death toll in Nepal from this flood was recorded at 579 people as of the same day. A total of 586 people lost their lives in both Nepal and China. The number of missing persons was counted as 1,924 in Nepal and 586 in China, totaling 2,510 people.
Authorities are also monitoring the possibility of additional disasters. They have established a checkpoint consisting of 5 people to monitor in real-time a lake formed by a landslide. The Chinese Ministry of Water Resources has instructed an analysis of the lake’s stability, collapse risks, and the expected scope of impact.
