The ruling and opposition parties engaged in a heated dispute on the 29th over the Board of Audit and Inspection’s self-investigation results, which revealed coercion and manipulation during audits into the alleged “statistical manipulation under the Moon Jae-in administration” and the “cover-up and manipulation of the 2020 West Sea official killing incident” during the Yoon Suk-yeol government.
Democratic Party of Korea spokesperson Cho Kye-won stated in a commentary, “The constitutional institution, the Board of Audit and Inspection, has proven its own descent into a regime puppet, perpetrating targeted and manipulated audits,” adding that the party would push for reforms of the Board.
Cho criticized, “Fabricating evidence and conducting coercive audits to suppress the previous administration destroyed constitutional order and the rule of law, constituting a grave crime against the state.” He emphasized that beyond disciplining those involved, investigations must uncover the masterminds behind the audit directives and planning.
He further stated, “Those who abused their authority to undermine state functions must face judicial accountability,” vowing to complete legal and institutional improvements to prevent the Board from being exploited as a political tool and restore its independence and neutrality as a constitutional institution.
Addressing the People Power Party, he demanded, “Acknowledge your complicity in the Yoon Suk-yeol administration’s political schemes to tarnish the previous government and apologize to the public.”
In contrast, People Power Party senior spokesperson Park Sung-hoon responded in a commentary, “We cannot conceal our dismay at this farce where a national constitutional institution has turned against its own legitimate audits.”
Park condemned, “The Board’s self-inflicted humiliation—abandoning its authority and embracing the role of a regime servant—will be recorded as the most shameful ‘dance of constitutional destruction’ in the history of the Board of Audit and Inspection.”
He accused the Board’s announcement of being “nothing more than a ‘trial interference’ and ‘political audit’ aimed at contaminating evidence for those involved in the ongoing first-instance trial of the statistical manipulation case, thereby securing their acquittal.” He vowed to hold the Board “fully accountable for its disgraceful surrender of constitutional independence to the regime.”
