Former Korea Football Association (KFA) President Chung Mong-gyu, who faces allegations of intervening in the appointment process of former national team coach Hong Myung-bo and providing preferential treatment, appeared before the police and stated there was no unfair intervention.
On the afternoon of the 2nd, the Financial Crimes Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency summoned Chung, now a suspect, for questioning.
Chung, alongside Lee Im-saeng, former KFA technical director, and Yoon Deok-yeo, former member of the Strengthening Committee, is accused of improperly intervening in Hong’s appointment as coach in 2024.
When questioned by reporters upon his arrival for the investigation, Chung responded to the inquiry, “What was the reason for your unfair intervention in the coach appointment process?” with, “I believe there was absolutely no unfair intervention.” He later answered, “Did you intervene unfairly to appoint Hong as coach?” with, “I will cooperate fully with the police investigation.”
The Financial Crimes Investigation Unit, which received the case from Jongno Police Station in Seoul last July, has been summoning and investigating individuals involved in Hong’s appointment. Last month, they summoned Hong as a suspect for a non-public investigation and conducted raids on the KFA headquarters in Jongno-gu, Seoul, and the Korean Football Park in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province.
