Lee Kwang-jae, a Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker, stated on September 2 that Yong Hye-in, the nominee for Minister of Gender Equality and Family, should resign from her proportional representative seat if she wishes to assume the ministerial position. Regarding the party’s stance, he emphasized, “It’s only natural,” adding weight to the call for her resignation.

In an interview with MBC on the same day, Lee commented on the nominee, saying, “As a young person who advocated for universal basic income, she has already served twice as a proportional representative. This time, if she wants to become a minister, it would be better to resign from her parliamentary seat.” He continued, “That would be a youthful approach and align with the philosophy of someone who has long advocated for universal basic income.”

Lee also noted that since Yong has already served twice as a proportional representative, she must now make a choice. “Yong Hye-in was selected twice as a proportional representative because her advocacy for universal basic income and her youthful challenge were highly regarded,” he said. “I believe she has received sufficient recognition. Now, she must make her own decision.” He added, “Trying to hold both positions might result in losing everything. I hope she makes a bold decision befitting her youth.”

According to a source from the party, there is a consensus within the party that Yong should step down. When asked, “Is the overall party atmosphere like that?” Lee replied, “It’s only natural,” and mentioned, “Typically, when a proportional representative assumes a government position, they resign—like Lee Hae-min did this time.” He added, “People don’t generally believe one can handle both roles.”

Regarding Kim Seung-won, the nominee for Minister of Justice, Lee said, “As someone with a judicial background, he will likely perform competently,” calling it “a different matter” compared to Yong’s case. “I think Kim Seung-won will do a good job,” he said. “Yong Hye-in should make a decision quickly.”
