A male middle school student in his 10s, A, was arrested by police after posting a message in a KakaoTalk Open Chat room threatening to kill an elementary school student in Cheonho-dong, Seoul.
The Jeju Western Police Station announced on September 2 that it had booked A on charges of public intimidation after completing its investigation on August 24 and planned to refer the case to prosecutors soon.
A is accused of entering an open chat room for residents of Seoul’s Gangdong-gu on August 24 and posting, “I will kill a first-grade elementary school student in Cheonho-dong.” Although A did not specify a particular school or student, police strengthened patrols by deploying additional local officers and detectives to three elementary schools in Cheonho-dong in preparation for potential incidents. School authorities also urged parents to closely monitor and guide their children to ensure safe commutes.
The Seoul Seocho Police Station, which initially received the report, traced the perpetrator and confirmed that A’s mobile phone number was registered in Jeju, transferring the case to the Jeju Western Police Station. The Jeju Western Police Station then identified A’s identity and proceeded with the investigation.
During police questioning, A admitted to the crime, stating, “I posted the message without much thought.” It was reported that A has been suffering from a mental illness.
