As maritime casualties continue to occur, the Korea Coast Guard has decided to operate a “Marine Safety Special Management Period” until the 30th.

During the special management period, the Coast Guard will conduct on-site inspections centered around commanders and pre-deploy patrol vessels and rescue equipment to high-risk maritime areas. Additionally, it will maintain a 24-hour emergency response readiness, focusing on areas with high usage of multi-passenger and leisure vessels, as well as fishing vessel concentrations.

The Coast Guard also plans to conduct guidance and crackdowns on violations such as failure to wear life jackets, overloading, exceeding passenger limits, and non-reporting of passengers during this period.

Earlier, on September 2, a tugboat capsized off the coast of Busan, resulting in six people missing and one people dead. On September 5, a motorboat capsized near Yeongjongdo, Incheon, killing two of the nine people aboard. On the same day, two people swimming at a coast in Mangyang-ri, Giseong-myeon, Uljin-gun, North Gyeongsang Province, also lost their lives in accidents.

Jang In-sik, the acting head of the Korea Coast Guard, stated, “When boarding a vessel or engaging in coastal activities, life jackets must be worn at all times.” He added, “In case of an emergency at sea, please immediately request rescue from the relevant authorities.”
