  • The staunch Raila supporter revealed that the late politician personally intervened in his marriage in a deeply personal way
  • Okanga also addressed claims that he betrayed Raila by joining Edwin Sifuna’s camp after the leader’s death

Nuru Okanga had the crowd at Raila Odinga’s first anniversary memorial hanging on his every word after dropping a personal confession that nobody saw coming.

Speaking at the outdoor evening event on 14 October 2026, the known ODM loyalist revealed that Raila Odinga personally paid his bride price, amounting to KSh 200,000.

According to Okanga, the late leader approached him directly, asked whether he had a woman he wanted to marry, and when Okanga said he had not yet paid dowry, Raila simply told him to send it and handed him the money.

“Raila Odinga mwenyewe. Aliniuliza. Ukona msichana wangu. Ulimtolea maari. Nikasema hapana Baba. 200,000. Peleka,” Okanga recounted to the crowd, drawing loud reactions from onlookers, some of whom lit up the night with phone flashlights.

Raila’s quiet acts of generosity

The clip, shared on TikTok by Dallas Media, quickly spread across social media as Kenyans resonated with the image of Raila as a man who showed up for ordinary people in private ways that rarely made headlines.

Okanga also took a jab at those who had not yet paid dowry for the women they live with, drawing laughter from the crowd as he contrasted their situations with his own, now-settled marital affairs.

Okanga hits back at betrayal claims

Okanga also used the moment to address accusations that he had turned his back on Raila’s legacy by moving into Edwin Sifuna’s political camp after Raila’s passing.

He was emphatic that he had not betrayed Baba, insisting he stood by the ODM leader until the very end.

He pointed out that Raila himself had encouraged his followers to exercise their freedom, including the freedom to support any candidate, join any party, or go wherever they chose.

“Baba alikuwa nasema ya kwamba uko na freedom ya kufanya kitu yoyote,” he said, using that as the basis for his political choices after Raila’s death.
