A California man who claimed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had taken away his wife was arrested for murder after her burned remains were discovered.
Jasmine Gill, 30, was last seen at her Sacramento home on September 30 and reported missing by her cousin on October 4.
Jasmine’s husband, 28-year-old Gurinder Singh Gill, told authorities that ICE agents had taken her into custody while she checked the mail, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
But when detectives got in touch with ICE, the federal agency said no enforcement activity had actually taken place at Gill’s home.
As their investigation continued, detectives also learned that the Gills were divorcing and involved in a child custody dispute.
Gurinder’s statements about his wife’s disappearance also had ‘several inconsistencies,’ the sheriff’s office said.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said burned human remains had been discovered in El Dorado County on October 1, and they were later confirmed to be Jasmine’s.
Gurinder was arrested on Wednesday and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on murder charges.

He is currently ineligible for bail, according to Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office records.
Gurinder was arraigned on Friday afternoon, according to Sacramento Superior Court records viewed by the Daily Mail.
There were no upcoming court dates for Gurinder listed in judicial records or by the sheriff’s office.
A missing persons poster for Jasmine said she had last been seen walking near Headstock Street and Allegretto Way in Sacramento County.
She was described as being 5-foot-3 and roughly 137 pounds, and wearing white pajamas with red polka dots at the time of her disappearance.
‘New information indicates her safety may be at risk,’ the poster ominously read.

Jasmine was revealed to be the mother to an eight-month-old baby boy in a GoFundMe fundraiser started by family member Daman Gill.
The fundraiser said Jasmine was a registered nurse, having followed in her Indian mother’s footsteps.
‘Perhaps the most heartbreaking part of her story is that she was fighting for a better future for herself and her baby,’ the fundraiser read. ‘She was trying to find the freedom, safety, and fresh start they both deserved.’
‘Tragically, before she could build that future, Jasmine was murdered, leaving behind the very child she was fighting so hard to protect,’ the GoFundMe continued.
The fundraiser noted that Jasmine’s family was looking for legal assistance concerning custody and her baby boy’s welfare.
As of Saturday night, about $6,000 had been raised. Money will also go towards sending Jasmine’s body home to India so that her family and relatives can say goodbye.
The Daily Mail has reached out to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office for further comment.
Gurinder did not have an attorney listed in court records.
