Democratic Party of Korea leader Kim Min-seok said on the 19th regarding Gyeonggi Governor Choo Mi-ae, who sparked controversy with her remarks about the “firefighting financial straw,” “The priority now is to make every effort possible to gauge the public’s sentiment and continue doing so until the people’s hearts are appeased.”

Rep. Kim, appearing on the party’s official YouTube channel that day, responded to a question about the party’s stance and direction regarding Governor Choo by saying, “The party already requested early on that an official apology would be appropriate,” and added the following.

Amid calls from some party members for disciplinary action against Governor Choo, Rep. Kim’s remarks were interpreted as indicating that he does not intend to initiate disciplinary discussions immediately.

Regarding the treatment of firefighting personnel, Rep. Kim stated, “There are ongoing efforts to consistently improve safety equipment and gear, and we also aim to continue strengthening mental health support,” adding, “For the most part, both ruling and opposition parties share a common mindset when it comes to supporting firefighting services.”

Concerning the argument against live-streaming Cabinet meetings, Rep. Kim remarked, “In a broad sense, it is irreversible for the President’s remarks and discussions with State Council members to be made public rather than conveyed through someone.”

He continued, “Making Cabinet meetings public not only involves disclosing the President’s remarks and the State Council members’ discussions but also entails the real-time transmission of various agendas addressed therein,” adding, “As far as I am aware, at the very least, there is ample room for expressing opinions for or against specific proposals.”

He concluded, “Since both state affairs and party affairs ultimately involve the public, it is advisable to maintain the principle of transparency while making improvements where concerns arise.”
