A Cambodian man in his 30s, who allegedly stabbed a man in his 20s of the same nationality to death near a bar in Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do, was caught by police at an airport while attempting to flee to his home country.

The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency and Miryang Police Station announced on the 21st that they had arrested A (30s), a Cambodian national, on charges of murder. The police applied for a bench warrant for A on the 19th, and the court issued the warrant after conducting a warrant validity review, pre-arrest suspect interrogation, on the same day.

According to the police, A is suspected of stabbing B (20s), another Cambodian national, multiple times with a blade he was carrying during a fight around 1:43 a.m. on the 18th near a karaoke bar in Naee-dong, Miryang, leading to B’s death. The altercation, which began inside the bar, escalated into a street brawl outside, during which the blade attack occurred. After the crime, A fled the scene and used taxis and trains to reach Incheon Airport to escape to his home country. However, police tracking him apprehended A around 4:10 p.m. the same day, approximately 14 hours after the crime, in the departure waiting area of the airport.

In the investigation, A admitted to the charges, stating, “I acted impulsively after B suddenly attacked me, and I became agitated.” It was reported that the two had just met for the first time that day. The police confirmed that A was not in an illegal stay status.

The police are expanding their investigation, as they have identified signs that some of the over 30 people present at the scene may have participated in assaulting B. The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency’s International Crime Investigation Unit is tracking the identities of Cambodian nationals suspected of jointly assaulting B.

Meanwhile, as the blade murder case heightened public anxiety in the region, the police have deployed additional personnel to the area near the crime scene and strengthened night patrols.
