A Minnesota father and his teenage daughter have been killed in a devastating off-road vehicle crash after spending time with loved ones at a family lunch.

Jacob Jeurissen, 48, and his 18-year-old daughter, Kiara, died at the scene after the side-by-side utility task vehicle they were travelling in toppled and rolled multiple times.

The pair were riding together on Friday afternoon in rural Minnesota when the vehicle overturned in Macville Township, around 30 minutes north of Aitkin, according to authorities.

The fatal crash happened at approximately 2.30pm, shortly after the family had gathered for lunch.

In a heartbreaking twist, relatives travelling behind the father and daughter were the ones who called 911 after the crash.

Both Jacob and Kiara suffered serious head injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, with officials indicating that speed may have been a factor.

The sudden loss has left the family devastated, with Jacob’s wife, Amanda Jeurissen, of Big Lake, Minnesota, now facing the unimaginable double heartbreak of losing both her husband and daughter in the same accident.

Paying tribute to the pair, Amanda told Northern News Now that they were deeply loved and would leave an enormous void in the lives of those who knew them.

‘They were both so well loved and are going to be incredibly missed by so many,’ she said.

Her words offered a glimpse into the scale of the loss confronting the family, as friends and relatives grapple with the deaths of two people whose lives were cut short in a matter of moments.

What began as an ordinary family gathering ended in a tragedy no family could have anticipated.

The knowledge that loved ones were riding behind Jacob and Kiara when the crash occurred has added another layer of anguish to an already devastating loss.

Instead of returning home from lunch together, the family was left mourning a husband, a father and a daughter.

A family friend has since launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to support Amanda and her loved ones in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The appeal describes the loss of Jacob and Kiara as heartbreaking and seeks to help the family through the emotional and practical burdens ahead.

‘The Jeurissen family is facing a heartbreaking loss after Amanda’s husband, Jake, and daughter, Kiara, passed away,’ the organizer wrote.

‘This fundraiser is being organized to support Amanda and the Jeurissen family as they carry the devastation and emptiness of losing them both.’

Their deaths also serve as a sobering reminder of the potentially devastating consequences of off-road vehicle crashes.

Authorities have not established what caused the vehicle to overturn, and the suggestion that speed may have played a role remains a preliminary indication rather than a confirmed finding.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The tragedy comes amid a wider toll of deaths and injuries involving off-road vehicles across the United States.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, off-highway vehicles, a category that includes all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility-terrain vehicles, are associated with an average of more than 800 deaths and an estimated 100,000 emergency department-treated injuries annually.

The dangers can be particularly severe when a vehicle overturns, potentially ejecting occupants or crushing them beneath its weight.

Minnesota has also recorded a significant number of off-road vehicle casualties. According to a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources summary dated November 5, 2024, the state had recorded 30 deaths across 253 ATV and off-highway motorcycle accidents that year, alongside 246 personal injuries.

Safety authorities urge riders to wear appropriate protective equipment, receive proper training, follow vehicle-specific passenger limits and adjust their speed to the terrain and conditions.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Amanda Jeurissen for comment.
