The production crew of the Disney+ (Plus) reality series “Battle of Fates” is said to be engaging with the affected families following claims that they organized a competition to predict the reasons for the deaths of deceased public figures without seeking permission.

According to industry sources, on the 3rd, the “Battle of Fates” production team met with the family of the late Senior Fire Officer Kim Cheol-hong and representatives from the firefighters’ union last week. The production team reportedly offered a sincere apology during the meeting and continued talks about subsequent actions. On the 27th of last month, the team stated they had decided to re-edit the controversial episode following the requests of the families of the late Senior Police Officer Lee Jae-hyeon and Senior Fire Officer Kim Cheol-hong.

Furthermore, Mr. A, who introduced himself as the nephew of the deceased, addressed misconceptions via his online platform. Mr. A mentioned, “Claims that we were misled into thinking a documentary was in the works are false. We apologize for the trouble caused by the confusion.” Previously, Mr. A had said, “They asked for permission to use images for a program celebrating national heroes but instead made a show that ridiculed my uncle’s passing.” The misunderstanding is said to have arisen because the family received a documentary suggestion from a different production company at the same time.

Mr. A stated, “I need to live with more consciousness to make sure the sacrifices of everyone who gave their lives for the country are never disrespected. If this situation had gone badly and created a negative example, I would have felt a deep sorrow in my heart for the rest of my life. However, now that it has been somewhat resolved, I feel a small relief from that burden.”

He stated, “I express my appreciation to all who spoke out and demonstrated care for my youngest uncle, the deceased uniformed public servants, and their loved ones. I am profoundly grateful as I realize that nothing could have been accomplished solely through my own voice.”

“Battle of Fates” is a reality show where 49 shamans challenge their fates through different tasks. The second episode, which was released on the 11th of last month and called “Guessing the Cause of Death of the Deceased,” caused some debate. In a task aimed at identifying the cause of death of the late Senior Police Officer Lee Jae-hyeon, who passed away while arresting a suspect in a violent crime in 2004, a shaman asked, “Isn’t being stabbed called ‘kalbbang’ [a colloquial term for stabbing]?” This statement surprised the panelists. The episode also included footage where cast members discussed the possible causes of death of the late Senior Fire Officer Kim Cheol-hong, who died in a fire in Hongje-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, in 2001, considering options like fire, collapse, or being crushed.

With backlash coming from the grieving families, police, and fire departments, the production team behind “Battle of Fates,” who had initially stated they had permission to use the footage, released a delayed apology.
