Gory details about a suspected axe attack that occurred during a fatal camping trip were disclosed in court, following the death of one individual and the injury of another.

Ahwen Kohn, 26, was present in Bail Court through a video connection on Tuesday concerning claims that he killed a 33-year-old man and suffocated a 25-year-old woman at the Little Styx River Campground, located east of Armidale, on Sunday evening.

Kohn is accused of striking the man in the head with an axe, resulting in his death, and then assaulting the woman as she attempted to contact an ambulance.

Rather than contacting emergency services, Kohn persuaded the woman to place the body in a vehicle and leave, according to the court.

According to police records, she subsequently transported the body from Ebor to Thora, which is approximately 60 kilometers away, in an attempt to seek assistance.

The court was told that emergency services discovered the man’s body showing ‘major injuries to the head’.

After the woman departed with the deceased man’s body, “[Kohn] went to another witness and requested a ride to the main road,” the prosecutor stated in court.

The defendant is said to have engaged in a dispute with the witness, who was seeking information about what occurred. The court was told that Kohn responded: “You don’t want to know.”

While Kohn was in the vehicle with the witness, he kept inquiring if there was a police station located close to Guyra.

Kohn was taken into custody on Waterfall Way in Ebor around 11:30 am on Monday, 24 hours following the reported murder.

The court was informed that police reportedly discovered a knife in his belt.

Two locations related to the crime were identified – one at the campsite, and another inside the woman’s vehicle.

Matthew Spicer, a legal aid attorney representing Kohn, submitted a request for bail, informing the court that his client had a “limited criminal record” and would adhere to strict conditions.

The law enforcement attorney opposed the granting of bail, informing the court that a conviction for Kohn’s murder would lead to a life imprisonment.

Kohn stayed quiet during the entire process.

Magistrate Miranda Moody acknowledged that Kohn had no prior record of violent behavior, but characterized the murder charge as ‘serious and brutal’.

She mentioned that his prior offenses consisted of drug-related and traffic violations, as well as property damage.

Magistrate Moody characterized the prosecution’s argument as ‘solid,’ pointing out that there were witnesses, and Kohn is said to have attempted to evade police attention.

[The case involves] an axe used on the deceased, and I believe that’s also a matter of concern.

Kohn was denied bail.

After being arrested on Monday, Kohn faced three charges, including murder, intentionally suffocating someone recklessly, and causing serious injury.

NSW Police Superintendent Chris McKinnon stated on Monday that the individuals were familiar with one another.

“It’s always a tragic event when someone loses their life in an incident like this,” he said to journalists.

It is assumed that they knew each other and were camping together along with a woman.

We are aware that the male [from Thora] got a ride from another person who was camping nearby, and he was dropped off at Waterfall Way.

Kohn is scheduled to attend the Armidale Magistrates Court on April 22.
