The National Intelligence Service stated on the 3rd that it has established a ‘Middle East Situation Response Task Force’ to thoroughly prepare for the developments after the U.S. and Israel conducted airstrikes against Iran.
The NIS mentioned in a press statement that it has been conducting daily emergency inspection meetings led by the director since the day of the airstrikes, which took place on the 28th of the previous month.
The NIS is concentrating on real-time tracking of developments and developing responses by operating a ’24-hour emergency situation team’ in collaboration with all operational bases in the Middle East where its personnel are located. Furthermore, it is actively assisting in the secure withdrawal of citizens living in Iran, Israel, and U.S. military installations by working with partner intelligence organizations. The NIS is also closely watching for risks in the supply chain, quickly sharing information with relevant authorities, and carrying out thorough on-site inspections across energy, transportation, defense, shipbuilding, and industrial sectors because of the closure of the Hormuz Strait.
Considering the evaluation that extremist organizations could take advantage of the volatile conditions in the Middle East to restore their power and execute major assaults, the NIS intends to thoroughly get ready for identifying and preventing both local and global terrorism threats.
The government has been conducting an ’emergency interagency meeting’ to assess the Middle East situation at the Government Seoul Complex, led by Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, since the 2nd, with the NIS involved. The NIS said, “We will utilize all available intelligence resources to safeguard national interests and the safety of our citizens.”
