The top 30 computer science institutions are primarily located in the United States, where international students may face annual tuition costs as high as US$71,300.
In late January, Times Higher Education published its 2026 World University Rankings by subject. Within the top 30 institutions for computer science, 16 are located in the United States, six in Asia, with the rest found in Europe and Canada.
The University of Oxford secured the top position, achieving an almost flawless rating of 99.9/100 in teaching, while also imposing the highest tuition costs for international students, amounting to $85,800.
Several other U.K. universities have annual fees nearly reaching $60,000, whereas U.S. colleges vary between approximately $22,300 and $71,300 per year.

Peking University stands as the sole Asian university in the top 10, ranked tenth, with the lowest tuition fees among these institutions at approximately $4,300 annually.
Two additional Chinese universities, Tsinghua and Zhejiang, also provide some of the most affordable tuition rates within the top 30.
The 2026 computer science ranking evaluates excellence in domains such as software development and engineering, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and cybersecurity and networking, along with various other disciplines.

A total of 1,165 universities from 84 different countries and regions were assessed based on five main criteria. The research environment has the highest significance at 29%, followed by teaching at 28%, research quality at 27.5%, industry income and technology transfer at 8%, and international outlook at 7.5%.
To be eligible, institutions need to have released a minimum of 500 research articles related to engineering from 2000 to 2024 and must have at least 20 faculty members specializing in the field, making up no less than 1% of the overall teaching staff.
