The Democratic Party of Korea announced on the 31st that it has chosen Representative Seo Young-kyo to lead the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, Representative Kwon Chil-seung to head the Administration and Security Committee, and Representative Soh Byung-hoon to take charge of the Health and Welfare Committee, in response to vacancies created by local election campaigns.
Kim Hyun-jung, the floor spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea, mentioned during a press conference on the same day, “The chairs of these standing committees have only a two-month term remaining. Hence, we did not follow previous practices in our appointments.” She further noted, “We deviated from traditional methods and chose individuals from the current active standing committees to speed up the supplementary budget and bills concerning people’s livelihoods.”
Member Seo is anticipated to simultaneously hold the position of head of the parliamentary special committee examining claims of politically driven prosecution interference and indictment within the Yoon Suk-yeol government, as well as lead the Committee on Legislation and Judiciary.
The chairs of the selected standing committees are set to be chosen in the plenary session later that afternoon.
