The POSCO Group conveyed a message to its staff about navigating challenges and attaining long-term growth for its 58th anniversary (April 1). In his commemorative speech on the 31st, the day prior to the founding anniversary, Chairman Chang In-hwa stated, “Let us carry forward the legacy of struggles that started 58 years ago on the desolate shores of Yeongil Bay and overcome the unpredictable business landscape to advance as a vital component of the global supply chain.”
In the speech released that day, Chairman Chang said, “Fifty-eight years ago today, our honorable founding generation took the first step in the illustrious history of the POSCO Group on the remote plains of Yeongil Bay,” and continued, “Without any capital, technology, experience, or resources, our forebears initiated the beginning of South Korea’s industrialization and charted a course toward prosperity for generations to come, firmly committed to achieving success in constructing an integrated steel plant on this barren land.”
When contrasting the difficult conditions of the past with today’s unpredictable business climate, Chairman Chang stated, “The business situation we currently face, which demands that we carry forward our successful legacy and confront the future, is exceptionally uncertain and challenging. Protectionism arising from power rivalries among major nations, the use of resources as weapons, and continuous conflicts and disputes around the world are impacting every aspect of the group’s operations and increasing a feeling of urgency.”
To address these challenges, Chairman Chang outlined three main objectives: attaining management goals via exceptional innovation, enhancing the business structure, and promoting labor-management cooperation and trust. He remarked, “As we raise the core competitiveness of the steel industry to the highest level globally, we must also reinforce the energy and materials sector by actively acquiring high-quality resources.” He highlighted the importance of cultivating ‘Next Core’ businesses—focused on the dual foundations of steel and secondary battery materials—to drive future industrial transformations and build a stable base for sustainable growth, regardless of external conditions.
In terms of corporate culture, Chairman Chang emphasized the idea of ‘One Team POSCO.’ He stated, “The tradition of employees coming together through mutual trust during difficult times has strengthened POSCO. Even if unforeseen challenges occur, let us work together with both labor and management to move forward into the future.”
In conclusion, Chairman Chang stated, “The commitment to ‘serving the country through steel production’ has been the core motivation for POSCO’s achievements. Now, as a vital participant in the global supply chain, let us jointly build a distinguished legacy of realizing bigger aspirations and attaining a significant advancement in the group’s value.”
