April 11, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan replaced some senior officers and elevated others on Saturday, according to the armed forces, who referred to the action as a standard administrative adjustment.
The Sudan Tribune has been informed that the retirements involve 21 officers who held the position of major general. Notable among them are Diab Badr Diab, Khalid al-Qadi, Qandeel Bashir, and Khalid Abdel Mutaal.
The military representative stated in a release that Burhan “issued rulings to advance several officers from different groups to higher positions and to send others for retirement.” The statement mentioned that these decisions were taken in line with military law and internal rules.
The timing of the retirements has faced backlash from Islamist groups. According to sources, some of the retired officers were heavily involved in the “Battle of Dignity,” the military’s continuous operation against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The group-wide reorganization comes after individual disciplinary measures taken earlier in the week. On Thursday, Major Sir al-Khatim al-Salmabi was removed from the military’s media department following the publication of a misleading report stating that Lieutenant General Shams al-Din Kabbashi had been appointed as army commander.
The action also comes after a recent reorganization of the General Staff. In the new structure, Lieutenant General Yasser al-Atta was named Chief of Staff, effectively eliminating the roles of deputy and assistant commanders.
After the restructuring, Burhan assigned important individuals to different positions. Shams al-Din Kabbashi was appointed as assistant for construction and strategic planning, Ibrahim Jaber took on the role of assistant for international relations and military cooperation, and Mirghani Idris was designated as assistant for military industries.
