The Trump supporter movement has long been centered on conspiracy theories, and recently, many have started promoting a new idea: that the 2024 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump wasstaged, and that his administration is currently concealing it.
On July 13, 2024, gunfire erupted at a Trump event in Butler, Pennsylvania, grazing his ear and resulting in the death of a spectator seated behind him. The 20-year-old individual responsible was subsequently killed by the Secret Service, and soon after, various conspiracy theories started spreading online. Nonetheless, supporters of the “Make America Great Again” movement viewed it as an indication of Trump’s heavenly safeguard — at least for now.
In recent months, however, Trump’s attractiveness haswaned with a MAGAwhich has been let down by the president’s foreign military actions, economic shortcomings, and clumsy disclosure of the Epstein files. Consequently, an increasing number of disenchanted MAGA supporters are proposing that the assassination attempt was staged.
I believe it might have been planned,” said podcaster Tim Dillon, who used to support Trump, in early April. According to Dillon, it’s time for Trump to admit that, “Some people will be upset by this, but we staged the assassination attempt in Butler to demonstrate how crucial it was to vote for me and how much I was prepared to do for them.
Although these assertions are becoming more prominent, they are not recent. In November, Tucker Carlsonsuggestedthat the FBI was responsible for concealing the truth regarding the shooting, stating that the “FBI lied” about the shooter’s online behavior. The next day, conservative commentator Emerald Robinson took it even further, postingthat the FBI “did it.”
However, MAGA supporters have recently started openly linking Trump to the alleged conspiracy, especially following the resignation of former US National Counterterrorism Center director Joe Kent from his position and his appearance on Carlon’s podcast, where Kent asserted—without providing any proof—that the inquiry into the shooting had been halted before it was completed.
This led QAnon supporter MJ Truth to pose a question to his 100,000 Telegram subscribers, “What are people’s opinions on the story about the Butler Shooting Attempt on Trump?” Almost all responses claimed the assassination was fabricated.
“The truth will emerge more than 60 years from now, when we’re all gone and no one really cares anymore… just like with JFK!!!!,” wrote one individual.
Then, following Carlson’s assertion that the Israeli government had “clues” regarding the shooting, far-right agitator Candace Owens embraced the conspiracy theory, claimingThat Israeli-American political donor Miriam Adelson was truly responsible for the attempted assassination. According to Owens, Adelson had given $100 million to Trump in return for his backing of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and when he went back on his promise, she attempted to have him killed.
Ali Alexander—a far-right figure who led the Stop the Steal movement following the 2020 presidential election—holds a distinct viewpoint: that Trump is the Antichrist.
If Donald Trump didn’t get a miracle, then it was either fraud or a sinister omen,” Alexander wrote in a PDF he shared on his Telegram channel on Tuesday. “There is biblical prophecy in Revelation 13:3 that seems to refer to the Antichrist being wounded on the head.
The passagehe’s referring to the passage, “I saw that one of its heads seemed to have been mortally wounded, but this mortal wound was healed. Astonished, the entire world followed the beast.” Trump has, by the way, faced many allegations that he is theAntichristin the past few weeks, however, for different reasons.
As WIREDnotes, “The majority of individuals talking about conspiracy theories regarding the shooting today are supporters of Trump or former supporters of Trump.”
