As Iran chose to allow access through the Strait of Hormuz during the Lebanon ceasefire, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iran had pledged not to obstruct the waterway again.

President Trump expressed on the 17th via his social media site Truth Social, “A magnificent and intelligent day for the world,” and asserted, “Iran has agreed with us not to obstruct the Strait of Hormuz once more.”

He stated, “The Strait of Hormuz will no longer serve as a tool to intimidate the global community.”

Earlier that day, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi shared on social media platform X, “As per the Lebanon ceasefire agreement, all ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz during the ongoing ceasefire will be fully allowed to proceed,” and added, “Vessels are required to follow the designated routes announced by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization.”

As a reply, President Trump thanked but once again emphasized the U.S. military’s position of keeping the embargo on Iran in place.

President Trump said, “Although the Strait of Hormuz is completely open and facilitating smooth passage, the naval embargo on Iran will continue in full force until the talks with Iran are fully concluded,” and he further mentioned, “Since a large part of the negotiation terms has already been arranged, this process will move forward very quickly.”

Israel and Lebanon agreed to a 10-day truce on that day, with the United States acting as the mediator. After Araghchi’s statement, global crude oil prices have dropped significantly.

In a separate statement, President Trump said, “Israel will no longer conduct airstrikes in Lebanon,” and added, “This is due to the fact that the United States has banned Israel from carrying out such bombings.”

Iran kept blocking the Strait of Hormuz even following a two-week truce agreement with the United States. In reaction, the U.S. initiated a counter-blockade of the Strait of Hormuz beginning at 11 p.m. on the 13th, according to Korean time, after the initial peace talks with Iran collapsed on the 11th.
