BEIJING – On Monday, North Korea announced that it conducted a test launch of enhanced ballistic missiles equipped with cluster warheads the day before, with the nation’s leader, Kim Jong Un, overseeing the operations.
The official Korean Central News Agency reported that five Hwasongpho-11 Ra surface-to-surface tactical ballistic missiles hit the target zone approximately 136 kilometers away.
On Sunday, Japan and South Korea reported that multiple short-range ballistic missiles were launched from the Sinpo region towards the Sea of Japan, with the South Korean military suggesting they could have been fired from a submarine.
“The aim of the test-fire is to check the features and strength of the cluster bomb warhead and the fragmentation mine warhead used in the tactical ballistic missile,” reported KCNA.
Kim stated that he was pleased with the outcomes, noting that the creation of various cluster munitions has been successful in enhancing the military’s high-density strike capacity, as reported by the agency.
North Korea announced earlier this month that it conducted a test of a Hwasongpho-11 Ka ballistic missile equipped with a cluster warhead.
The nation has not signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions, which bans the use, manufacture, transfer, and storage of weapons that disperse smaller explosive devices across a large area.
