During a press briefing at the National Assembly in the morning, Representative Jang stated, “There was thorough thought before choosing to visit the U.S. prior to the local elections, and I was fully aware that controversy would arise,” and continued, “However, the tough choice to go to the U.S. was made because South Korea is experiencing a serious crisis caused by the Lee Jae Myung administration’s series of diplomatic missteps.” Initially, Representative Jang had planned to leave on the 14th and remain in Washington, D.C. for two nights and four days. However, he moved his departure to the 11th, extended his stay to five nights and seven days, and then postponed his return until the 17th, leading to a total of eight nights and ten days spent in the U.S.
Representative Jang said, “The Lee Jae Myung administration keeps creating difficulties in relations with the U.S. This is clear not only from the president’s statements but also from the concerns raised by Unification Minister Chung Dong-young.” He further noted, “In these circumstances, the opposition party should take initiative to demonstrate efforts in addressing these matters, and the public will judge us accordingly,” adding, “I think this is part of the local election strategy.”
Concerning the results of his trip to the United States, Representative Jang mentioned, “We created a meaningful direct line with important Republican leaders in the U.S., establishing a basis of trust to support the unstable South Korea-U.S. alliance,” and noted, “We had meetings with key U.S. government officials, including those from the White House and the State Department, to exchange views on ongoing economic matters such as trade talks and set up channels for continued mutual collaboration.” Representative Jang said, “In light of the quickly evolving global situation caused by the conflict in Iran, the U.S. strongly encouraged South Korea, as an ally, to take on a role that matches its economic and international standing,” and added, “We thoroughly discussed cooperation strategies and South Korea-U.S. partnership aimed at achieving peace on the Korean Peninsula.”
