Hollywood star Charlize Theron has shared that she experienced domestic abuse at the hands of her father during her early years.
Theron recounted her experiences of childhood domestic abuse and her father’s passing in an article for *The New York Times*, which was published on the 18th.
Theron, hailing from South Africa, mentioned that she was raised on a farm. She said, “I believe I realized at a relatively young age that our home was unlike my friends’ homes,” and continued, “I recall feeling frightened when I saw intoxicated individuals when I was very young.”
She went on, “My father constructed a big bar within the house, which was typical in South Africa. He used that area as his living space,” and described, “He would occasionally vanish and come back completely intoxicated. At those times, the house would turn into a mess and be very loud.” She also mentioned, “My mother wasn’t the type to stay quiet. She made her disapproval of my father’s behavior very clear. This resulted in intense verbal abuse.”
Theron remembered, “My father was intimidating. Even though he never physically harmed me or forced me against a wall, he used to drive while intoxicated. The verbal mistreatment was intense, and threats were a regular part of everyday life.”
She also shared her recollection of her father’s passing. Theron stated, “I was 15 years old. I had a bad feeling the moment I saw my father driving in,” and remembered, “He crashed through the door and came in, declaring he would kill us. As soon as he got past the first door, my mother ran to the safe and retrieved a gun.”
She said, “My mother entered my room, and as the door had no lock, we used our bodies to block it,” and she continued, “My father fired at the door, but he never hit us. His intention to kill us was obvious.” Eventually, Theron’s mother had to shoot her husband to safeguard herself and her daughter. It is reported that Theron’s father died in this event, while her mother was not charged because self-defense was acknowledged.
Theron remarked, “Unfortunately, this isn’t uncommon. It occurs frequently in many households,” and noted, “No one treats their circumstances with seriousness.” Theron, who states, “Trauma doesn’t shape me,” has been involved in promoting the prevention of sexual violence and has regularly engaged in initiatives that assist women affected by domestic abuse.
She stated, “The incident that night changed everything,” and then said, “Looking back, I understood that my mother only saved my life after I got over the shock.” She went on, “I believe we should discuss such events. This way, others won’t feel isolated,” and added, “When this happened to us, we thought we were the only ones. Now, we no longer face such situations.”
