A pair found themselves ’embarrassed’ and ‘disappointed’ following their purchase of a ‘garden arch’ from Temu, only to discover it was simply an image of one.
Lucy Walker, 38, and her husband William Walker, 41, believed they had found a good deal when they purchased the £11.19 arch from an online marketplace earlier this month.
The couple hoped the garden arch would bloom with flowers but became doubtful upon receiving the small package on April 13.
They unwrapped the box and immediately understood that what they had anticipated was a metal arch was actually a 2D printed piece of cloth.
William, who runs a kitchen renovation business, had already bought flowers to place around the arch and has promised to carefully review the listing before his next online order.
Lucy, from County Antrim, Northern Ireland, said: “I do a lot of online shopping and typically my husband asks me to place orders, but this time he chose to take the plunge and order some items on his own.”
He was searching for an arch to place in the garden so he could cultivate some flowers and came across the image, didn’t read the advertisement carefully, and believed he had discovered a good deal.
When the package arrived, we couldn’t determine what the final item was, but when he lifted it, he understood what had occurred.

William chuckled upon realizing his error, but Lucy indicated he was also ’embarrassed’ and ‘disappointed’.
She stated, “I believe he felt somewhat embarrassed for himself after being caught, as we would tease our moms for getting caught when they ordered something online.”
He didn’t realize what it was at first, which is why I began recording him. When he held it up, he realized it was a photograph and not the real arch.
He felt let down — he had intended to have it installed in the garden this weekend.
He’s very passionate about his gardening and had numerous flowers prepared to begin growing around it.
Lucy acknowledged that the mistake occurred due to William misreading the product description.
She remarked, “I don’t believe he reviewed the details carefully. If you’re unfamiliar with purchasing from such platforms, it’s quite simple to make a mistake.”
I would advise others to read the description carefully — it’s one of those cases where if it seems too good to be true, it likely is.
I believe they [Temu] do have a duty to enhance the clarity of their product listings and descriptions, but individuals also need to assume some responsibility. If you’re purchasing online, make sure to read what you’re getting instead of rushing through the process.

Lucy mentions that William will be searching for a new arch this weekend – and from now on, the online shopping will fall to her.
She mentioned: “William is likely to be searching for another one this weekend – it will probably be me who does the checking to make sure the listing is accurate and I can read it properly.”
In the future, I believe online shopping will likely be up to me.
A representative from Temu stated: “We recognize how disappointing it can be when a purchase fails to meet expectations.”
Temu asks sellers to include comprehensive details, images, and technical information for each item listed, and we recommend buyers to examine these thoroughly prior to purchasing. If a product is received in damaged condition or does not match the description, customers are eligible for a complete refund within 90 days, with our customer service team ready to assist at any time.
