“Hello Senator, may I ask one more question?” said Jacob Carlson.

“Nope, I need to go, I have a 5 p.m. press conference. And I need to get ready for it,” Sullivan said.

“But why did you violate your promise to return the money you received from the Pebble Mine CEO?” Carlson questioned.

Sullivan’s response was swift.

“I need to go. Thanks!” he said — and vanished.

“What made you break your promise? To get the money back?” Carlson asked.

But the senator had already departed.

“Okay. With that…” an event coordinator mentioned, trailing off as the crowd laughed.

The recorded exchange is being discussed in Alaska political circles, as reported by Alaska Public Media’s Alaska At-Large newsletter, and is anticipated to play a major role in future anti-Sullivan advertisements as his Senate campaign against Democrat Mary Peltola intensifies.

In 2020, Sullivan promised to give all campaign funds received from Pebble Mine’s former CEO Tom Collier to a charitable organization following the release of hidden recordings where Collier claimed he had Sullivan “in a corner, staying silent.” Sullivan described Collier’s actions as “unethical behavior.”

Sullivan continues to receive donations from Pebble’s current chief executive, John Shively, who contributed $500 in December and an additional $500 in February.
