Speaker of the National Assembly Woo Won-shik met with Representative Ahn Ho-young, who has been on a hunger strike for 10 days following his loss in the Democratic Party of Korea’s Jeonbuk governor primary on the 21st, and asked him to discontinue the protest.

Speaker Woo, following a visit to the protest location in front of the main building of the National Assembly in Yeouido that morning, stated to reporters, “After approximately 10 days of fasting, health starts to decline noticeably, so I advised him to get a medical check-up and conclude it sooner.”

Speaker Woo also visited the protest location on the second day of Representative Ahn’s hunger strike. He stated, “Representative Ahn has already conveyed his complaints to the world,” and mentioned, “I have gone on fasts multiple times before. Exceeding 10 days is risky.”

Concerning his health, Representative Ahn informed Speaker Woo, “I am mostly staying in bed now, experiencing dizziness, and my blood sugar levels have dropped considerably.” It was also reported that Representative Ahn said to him on that day, “I appreciate you visiting twice, Speaker, and I will keep your words in mind.”

On that day, the protest location of Representative Ahn was visited by Democratic Party legislators Park Gyun-taek, Song Jae-bong, and Yoon Joon-byung, as well as Speaker Woo.

The Democratic Party’s candidate for the Jeonbuk governor position in the June 3 local elections has been confirmed as Representative Lee Won-taek. Representative Ahn, who failed to win the primary, has been on a hunger strike since the 11th at a tent located in front of the main building of the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, causing continuous consequences from the primary process.

On the 12th, Representative Ahn said, “I will keep up the ongoing protest until my request for a re-examination is acknowledged,” and is carrying out a hunger strike to call for a re-investigation into claims of ‘third-party meal expense payments’ against Representative Lee, who is seen as part of the pro-Jung Chung-rae group.
