April 18, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – On Saturday, the Emergency Lawyers group condemned an “incitement campaign” aimed at executive office member Rehab Mubarak after she reported on the alleged use of chlorine gas as a chemical weapon in Sudan’s conflict.

Sudanese judicial officials stated on Friday that they have initiated legal action against Mubarak. Authorities alleged that she disseminated “misleading” information which endangers national security.

A rights organization stated in a release that the campaign is a “concerning increase” in the targeting of human rights advocates. It pointed out that assaults have evolved into coordinated online initiatives aimed at discrediting individuals who report on abuses.

Social media platforms and online networks have been utilized to make ambiguous charges and demand the prosecution of Mubarak, the group noted. It claimed that these actions aim to damage the reputation of human rights efforts and establish a hostile atmosphere that endangers the security and autonomy of activists.

The statement highlighted that Mubarak’s activities are protected under the legitimate rights outlined in international agreements concerning freedom of speech and the ability to observe and report on violations.

Inquiry and responsibility are essential in tackling serious breaches linked to the conflict, including claims of employing globally banned weapons, the organization mentioned. It cautioned that hindering those documenting these issues undermines justice and encourages lawlessness.

The organization called for strong legal and institutional safeguards to create a secure setting for human rights advocates to carry out their work without fear. It urged an immediate halt to all types of incitement and opposed any retaliatory prosecutions.

The statement called on the UN Special Rapporteur for the human rights defenders’ situation to act immediately. It asked the rapporteur to engage with the relevant authorities to halt the violations and provide protection for Mubarak and her fellow advocates.

The group stated that the international community, especially the UN Human Rights Council, must view these breaches as a significant danger to justice initiatives and implement real actions to avoid accountability.
