The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) was actively involved in the 5th Antalya Diplomacy Forum 2026, which took place from April 17 to 19 in Antalya. Secretary-General Sohail Mahmood headed the delegation and emphasized the significance of diplomacy, multilateralism, and global collaboration in tackling worldwide issues.
Held with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, the forum focused on the theme ‘Mapping Tomorrow, Managing Uncertainties,’ and gathered attendees from 150 countries, including leaders, ministers, and high-level officials from international organizations, according to an official statement. During his participation, Mahmood highlighted that dialogue and diplomacy continue to be crucial instruments for dealing with a more intricate global and regional landscape.
At a senior-level discussion about investment, he emphasized the increasing connection between global politics and economic factors, pointing out that changing strategies like diversification, near-shoring, and friend-shoring are altering global supply chains beyond just cost issues. From the D-8 viewpoint, he emphasized the importance of balanced and progressive policy methods, backed by solid internal structures and improved global collaboration, to maintain investment trends in developing countries. He also highlighted that diplomacy is crucial in promoting stability, avoiding conflicts, and establishing a favorable climate for economic development.
The secretary-general also emphasized the significance of predictability, infrastructure growth, connectivity, and reliable cross-border partnerships in drawing investment, while noting D-8’s partnership with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in creating guidelines for investment policy. On the margins of the forum, Mahmood conducted several bilateral meetings with major international representatives. In discussions with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, both parties reconfirmed their dedication to boosting institutional cooperation. During talks with Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, the conversation centered on improving collaboration in trade, youth involvement, and institutional advancement.
During a separate meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh, both parties examined opportunities to enhance collaboration, especially within academic and knowledge-driven fields. Mahmood also met with Turkey’s Minister of Trade Ömer Bolat, ECO Secretary-General Asad Majeed Khan, CICA Secretary-General Kairat Sarybay, OIC Assistant Secretary-General Aftab Ahmad Khokhar, and UNEP representative Jamil Ahmad, along with other participants. The conversations during these meetings addressed various areas such as trade cooperation, environmental partnerships, scientific and technological connections, and regional economic integration. The discussions also emphasized improving private sector links and fostering business-to-business relationships among member states.
During his media appearances, Mahmood pointed out the increasing significance of the D-8 as a medium for South-South collaboration, promoting inclusive and sustainable development via discussion and building partnerships. He stressed that tackling upcoming challenges demands strategic vision, with strong leadership being essential in handling global uncertainties. He also praised Turkey for effectively organizing the event, mentioning that the Antalya Diplomacy Forum has become a significant global platform for confronting current issues and driving practical solutions.
