HD Hyundai has become the first local company to obtain a key research and development (R&D) project from the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR). This signifies the company’s transition into a stage of collaborative research and development of U.S. Navy technologies, with assessments indicating that the level of collaboration with the U.S. has improved by one step.
On the 26th, HD Hyundai revealed that it has recently entered into agreements with the U.S. Office of Naval Research for two research initiatives, focusing on enhancing ship performance, during a meeting held at the ONR headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, U.S. The ONR, which operates under the U.S. Department of the Navy, serves as a key organization responsible for advancing science and technology for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Participants included Jang Kwang-pil, director of the Future Technology Research Institute at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, and Rachel Riley, director of the ONR, along with other attendees.
The shipbuilding sector perceives this agreement as a step forward in maritime defense collaboration. Earlier, the involvement of South Korean shipbuilders in U.S. Navy initiatives was restricted, focusing mainly on support roles without access to U.S. naval technologies. However, the ONR project represents a research and development partnership where they engage directly in the U.S. Navy’s technology advancement process, indicating the U.S.’s formal acknowledgment of South Korea’s digital shipbuilding technologies and high-level manufacturing skills.
HD Hyundai aims to create technology leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to assess the survival chances of warships in real-time within dynamic ocean conditions. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will collaborate with a research group from Seoul National University. Furthermore, the company will explore ways to boost the efficiency of warship production through the use of cutting-edge manufacturing techniques. This initiative will be managed by the Future Technology Research Institute of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering.
Joo Won-ho, CEO of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, said, “Taking the ONR project contract as a chance, we aim to enhance collaboration with the U.S. in the naval vessel field,” and added, “We will do everything possible to expand the scope of Korean maritime defense.”
