The People Power Party announced that former Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Park Min-sik, has been selected as their nominee for the June 3 by-election in Busan Buk-gap National Assembly on the 5th.
The People Power Party’s nomination committee announced on the same day that, following the integration of results from a two-day party member vote (50%) and a public opinion survey (50%) carried out between the 3rd and 4th, candidate Park was chosen as the final nominee after beating former KBS journalist Lee Young Poong. With this, the People Power Party has finalized nominations for 12 of the 14 districts in this by-election.
Candidate Park, originally from Busan, completed his education at Gupo Elementary School, Gupo Middle School, and Busan Daesabeo High School. He held two terms as a legislative representative in Busan Buk·Gangseo Gap and served as the inaugural Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs during the Yoon Suk-yeol administration.
With Park confirmed as the candidate from the People Power Party, the focus is on whether the opposition will come together in the Busan Buk-gap by-election. In this area, former leader Han Dong-hoon, who was removed from the People Power Party, has finalized his independent preliminary candidacy registration. Recent surveys indicate that Park, Han, and Ha Jung-woo of the Democratic Party of Korea have comparable approval ratings, prompting many predictions that their decision to unite could determine the election result.
Meanwhile, Park Duk-hyum, head of the party’s nomination committee, addressed reporters on the same day, commenting on Chung Jin-suk, the former deputy speaker of the National Assembly, who has applied for nomination in the by-election for the Chungnam Gongju·Buyeo·Cheongyang National Assembly seat: “If the ethics committee holds its meeting as planned on the 7th, we will hold a session to make a decision once we receive the results.” Former Deputy Speaker Jeong, who previously served as chief of staff to former President Yoon Suk-yeol, is currently under indictment by the special prosecutor investigating insurrection. According to the People Power Party’s internal rules and regulations, his eligibility to participate in various primary elections has been suspended. The nomination committee will make its final decision on the nomination after the ethics committee determines whether to acknowledge any exceptional circumstances.
Furthermore, Chairman Park noted that candidate Kim Hyuk-jong, who also applied for nomination in the same area, was found ineligible by the clean nomination support group and therefore was unable to register as a candidate or participate in an interview.
