MAY 5, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan has alleged that the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia were behind a drone attack on Khartoum International Airport, according to a government representative who spoke on Tuesday, signaling a significant increase in regional conflicts.

The claims come after a series of air strikes on Monday that hit the capital’s primary airport, residential areas, and various military facilities, such as the Signal Corps base in Khartoum North and the al-Markhiyat training center in Omdurman.

In a joint press briefing held in the early hours of Tuesday, Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem and military representative Asim Awad Abd al-Wahab claimed they possess “definitive proof” that the drones used in the operation were deployed from Bahir Dar airport in Ethiopia.

We officially announce the participation of the UAE and Ethiopia in the attack on Khartoum airport,” officials stated in a release published by the state news agency. They further mentioned that the government retains the right to retaliate “at a time and location of its own choosing.

Military authorities shared technical information claiming that a drone bearing the serial number S88, which is stated to belong to the Emiratis, was monitored entering Sudanese airspace from Ethiopia. The military asserts that this particular aircraft participated in attacks in the Blue Nile and Kordofan areas prior to being shot down near El Obeid in March.

A military representative also claimed that another drone, which was launched from the same Ethiopian location, entered the airspace on May 1, aiming at the capital’s airport, but was subsequently intercepted by air defense systems.

The Sudanese government has brought back its ambassador to Addis Ababa for discussions after the event. The Ethiopian administration has previously rejected such accusations, calling them “unfounded” during a diplomatic meeting in March.

Foreign Minister Salem cautioned that Sudan is ready for “all possibilities,” including direct military conflict, to protect its sovereignty and national security from ongoing air violations.
