Addis Ababa, May 5, 2026 (ENA) — Mayor Adanech Abiebie stated that the real test of patriotism for the current generation is about lifting the country out of poverty and addressing underdevelopment.
She spoke during the 85th Patriots’ Victory Day event, which took place at the Patriots’ Victory Monument Square (Arat Kilo) in Addis Ababa, where senior officials such as Taye Atske Selassie and veteran patriots were present.
Considering the historic win against fascist troops, the Mayor stated that Ethiopian patriots—both men and women—succeeded not by having better weapons, but by showing endurance, togetherness, and a strong devotion to their homeland.
Their dedication, she observed, secured the continuation of national independence and created a heritage that needs to be protected and revered.
Adanech emphasized that this heritage comes with a duty for the current generation—to create its own story of patriotism by making real contributions to the country’s growth.
“Today, patriotism involves liberating our country from poverty and underdevelopment,” she stated, noting that ensuring proper access to the sea is also a key part of this generation’s historical duty.
She also emphasized that the Patriots’ Day of Victory should not merely serve as a time for reflection, but also as a renewed dedication to promoting peace, progress, and mutual prosperity.
The Mayor urged people from every sector of society to act as advocates for growth and protectors of harmony, emphasizing that long-term national advancement relies on the shared determination and involvement of everyone.
