A former two-term leader of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, Mogaji Olugbenga Opadotun, has warned against efforts to split Oyo State based on religious lines, stating that such actions might endanger the state’s harmony and cohesion.
Opadotun issued the warning in a statement, expressing his concern over what he referred to as “secret activities” by certain people attempting to divide the state along religious lines.
He pointed out that Oyo State has historically not been associated with casting votes or being voted for due to religious considerations. He referenced the Tinubu/Shettima presidential campaign, in which both leaders are Muslims, but still garnered significant Christian support throughout the South, South East, and North Central regions.
As per the statement, “These actions might only endanger the peace, cohesion, and harmony that have been present in the leading state so far.”
“Why are the wolves crying now?” he questioned, emphasizing that Nigerians should focus on competence, merit, and skills rather than local interests.
Opadotun stated that the state required flexible, energetic, and competent leaders irrespective of their religious affiliations to drive progress.
He also voiced worry about a continuing conflict in a community within the state, stating that a group of individuals, using religion as a cover, were involved in a long-standing dispute with a Christian first-class traditional leader.
He urged those involved in the campaign to channel their efforts into the political, economic, and technological advancement of the state, instead of “stirring up divisions.”
