NyandaruaSenator John Methu has saidthat former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is required to run for the presidency in the upcoming election2027 general election.
The senator stated that Gachaguaremains the opposition’s most formidable contender against President William Ruto even after his impeachment.
During Gachagua’s visit to the United Kingdom, Methu stated that Gachagua was the “engine” of the opposition and should return to Kenya promptly to assist in mobilizing efforts against the government.
“I back all the opposition candidates. If Gachagua is with you in the UK, matters will remain very calm; that is why we must release him within at least a week,” Methu stated.
The remaining of us will be waiting for Gachagua in Nairobi to come and assist the opposition in pressuring the government. Do not allow the engine of the opposition to remain in the UK for too long..”
The senator claimed that Gachagua has a broader political support base compared to other opposition leaders and thus should head the coalition’s presidential campaign.
“A person who has five million votes cannot delegate authority to someone with three million votes. If the engine that can propel the opposition is the same one that will lead the government, then that individual should be put forward and ultimately become president,” Methu said.
Methu also rejected assertions that Gachagua’s impeachment bars him from running for the presidency, stating that the former vice president still has legal options to contest the decision in court.
“Gachagua, whether removed from office or not, our legal system permits him to run provided he hasn’t exhausted all legal avenues to reverse his unlawful removal,” he stated.
You all are aware that he was impeached unjustly and that the case is destined to collapse even in the eyes of the public. Anyone claiming that Gachagua will not appear on the ballot is simply trying to discourage his supporters, as they recognize him as a strong contender..”
Gachagua is currently in London, making a renewed effort to engage the Kenyan diaspora.
Among the planned events in London are a cultural gathering on Saturday showcasing Kenyan performers and a welcome event for Gachagua following his arrival.
Gachagua’s tour in the UK occurs alongside a larger pattern of opposition figures increasing their global engagement to strengthen support from the diaspora.
Although the number of voters in the diaspora is still relatively small—approximately 10,000—their resources and impact continue to draw the attention of political figures.
Gachagua personally led a prominent six-week trip across the United States, which concluded on August 21, 2025.
The campaign was marked by strong political activism designed to gain backing for his 2027 presidential run and unite resistance against President Ruto.
