A former senatorial candidate from Kaduna Central, representing the All Progressives Congress, Yerima Shettima, has stepped down from the contest and promised backing for all party candidates as the general election approaches.

Shettima declared his exit during a press briefing on Sunday, stating that the choice came after thorough discussions and thoughtful consideration.

The previous candidate stated that his action was carried out in accordance with the APC’s ruling on the Kaduna Central senatorial election.

“Following extensive discussions and careful consideration, I have chosen to honor the decision made by our esteemed party concerning the senatorial election,” he stated.

He emphasized that the withdrawal should not be seen as an action driven by fear or weakness, but rather as a show of commitment to party unity and discipline.

“This choice is not driven by fear, weakness, or timidity, but instead stems from my steadfast dedication to party unity, discipline, and shared advancement,” Shettima said.

He reasserted his dedication to the governing party and promised to keep backing its achievements at every level.

“As a loyal and dedicated member of the party, I stay firm in my backing of the APC and confirm my willingness to keep doing my part for the success of our outstanding party,” he added.

Shettima also urged his followers and political allies to stay composed and back candidates nominated by the APC.

“The collective focus should be on the unity and achievements of the APC,” he stated.

The previous candidate also urged unity among upset party members to enhance solidarity within the party before the elections.

He thanked the members of the Capacity Movement, headed by Sani Shehu Sado, and his campaign team for their assistance throughout the political journey.

Shettima also reconfirmed his backing for the President and the Governor of Kaduna State.

“I officially declare my withdrawal from the Kaduna Central Senatorial election in a positive manner and will follow the party’s decisions,” he stated.

The emergence occurs against the backdrop of increasing political shifts within the APC in Kaduna State, after the party’s recent primary elections, which nominated candidates for different elected positions in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

Over the past few weeks, several candidates and party members have expressed worries about the way the primary elections were handled, claiming there were unfair practices and interference in some of the races.

Nevertheless, party leaders have kept encouraging dissatisfied members to support reconciliation and strive for the APC’s unity.
