A man from Australia passed away following a fall into a ravine while hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, according to local officials.
The High Mountain Rescue Unit in Cusco city discovered the body of 53-year-old Matthew Cameron Paton on Thursday, approximately 300 meters (984 feet) down a ravine near the “50 Gradas” part of the trail.
On Wednesday, Paton—who arrived in Cusco approximately 12 days ago alongside his wife—was reported missing following an incident where he fell through a damaged railing while hiking the renowned Peruvian mountain trail with a group of tourists and a guide, according to the police.
Officials will look into the reason for the collapse, and Paton’s body is anticipated to be moved to a nearby town.
Head of the Cusco Police Region, General Virgilio Velasquez, stated that search and rescue efforts were initiated on Wednesday following reports about the missing individual.
“We have information suggesting that he seemingly stumbled while crossing a wooden bridge and probably attempted to grab the wooden railing,” Velasquez said, as reported by the Peruvian news agency Andina.
“But it gave way, and he slid into the void with it. Unfortunately, he tumbled down the ravine,” Velasquez added.
In a statement, a representative from the Police Association of Victoria (TPAV) mentioned that their staff and members were shocked and heartbroken by “the loss of one of our members in a tragic accident abroad.”
The association stated, ‘Matt’s involvement in policing, including his work in training officers and serving as a TPAV Assistant Delegate, reflected the dedication and compassion he showed towards his fellow officers and his desire to contribute to the field of law enforcement.’
The has contacted the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for a response.
