Law enforcement is intensifying their probe into Chung Yong-jin, the head of Shinsegae Group, who has been linked to the controversy surrounding Starbucks’ “Tank Day” campaign.

On the 22nd, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Public Crime Investigation Unit called Kim Su-hwan, the secretary-general of the civic organization Citizens’ Livelihood Countermeasures Committee (the committee), for questioning regarding the report, beginning at 1 p.m.

Previously, Kim filed a report against Chung and Son Jung-hyun, the former CEO of Starbucks Korea, with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on the 20th, alleging insults and defamation. The report mentioned that Starbucks Korea launched the “Tank Tumbler Series” on the 18th, which marked the 46th anniversary of the May 18th Democratic Uprising, using promotional slogans like “Tank Day” and “Tack! On the Desk.” It claimed that Chung, as the major shareholder of Starbucks Korea, was responsible for lapses in management and oversight.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Department advanced the investigation timeline for the complainant by one week, scheduling it for the same day following the case’s receipt. Earlier, Gangnam Police Station, which had initially been handling the case, had intended to conduct the investigation on the 29th.

Following the completion of the police inquiry, Kim intends to organize a press event at the Mapo Police Station under the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.
