TOKYO – Former world champion and three-time Olympic medalist Shoma Uno will compete again alongside former world junior champion Marin Honda in ice dance starting from the new season, they announced on Friday, with the duo targeting the Winter Olympics.

“Each day, we are progressing with great resolve as we embrace new challenges,” Uno and Honda, who have openly confirmed their relationship, stated in an Instagram post.

Following his announcement of retirement in May 2024, Uno teamed up with Honda, who had also left the competitive scene, to appear in an ice show series that he organized.

“We will keep making days that bring us satisfaction, holding onto the emotions that only the two of us understand,” the couple mentioned in the post.

A 28-year-old Uno made history as the first Japanese figure skater to claim consecutive world championships in 2022 and 2023.

A native of Nagoya also secured three Olympic medals — a silver in the team competition and a men’s singles bronze at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, as well as a silver in the men’s category at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games.

A 24-year-old from Kyoto, Honda, claimed the women’s championship at the 2016 World Junior Figure Skating Championships.

Among Japanese figure skaters, Daisuke Takahashi, who earned a men’s singles bronze medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, partnered with Kana Muramoto and placed 11th at the 2023 world championships.
