England manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted Cole Palmer misses ‘too many’ Three Lions camps after the Chelsea midfielder pulled out of the latest squad.
Palmer withdrew from the squad on Monday morning despite playing in all five of Chelsea’s Premier League matches so far, with it understood he is monitoring a minor injury.
England are due to face 2026 World Cup winners Spain first, before two games against Czechia and another v Croatia.
Tuchel did not take Palmer to the World Cup after his last subpar season with Chelsea, and, speaking at Wembley Stadium after announcing his squad for this break, said the player should have ‘a point to prove’.
‘My understanding is he plays with discomfort and pain and cannot compete at the highest level with discomfort and pain so he withdrew and informed us and Chelsea informed us,’ Tuchel said on Friday. ‘We are not managing load.
‘When I was in club football I used the term of an international break. When you hear it on the other side, it’s a totally different picture. It’s not an international break, and I think that’s what we created now. It is a competitive environment, where the players love to be, they love to train and be with each other, that’s what togetherness and brotherhood looks like and that’s what we created.
‘We will never compromise on that. We will never let this creep in that we have the feeling players don’t want to come. It’s fair enough, but we will focus on the guys who absolutely want to play for England.
‘For sure it is another missed opportunity. He misses too many opportunities. And I don’t blame him for it, it’s just the fact he misses way too many camps with injuries and I only want to rely on what I personally witness and what I see with my team, and for that you have to be in camp. If you are not in camp, there is a next level to impress that you cannot achieve because you can only do it when you are with me on the pitch. It is a missed opportunity.’
Despite sources describing Palmer as having a muscular issue, him pulling out of England duty is bound to spark a debate surrounding club v country. The news of his impending withdrawal led to immediate criticism.
His decision comes after Tuchel had issued the 24-year-old with a stern warning upon recalling him to the squad last week.
Tuchel said: ‘It is one thing to be nominated, like with Cole, and getting your ticket back in the squad but it’s another thing to perform for England.
‘Cole needs to step up when he comes and he needs to show these kind of numbers to get his place, keep his shirt and justify the nomination.’
He added: ‘So now it is a new competition. Some players, some positions, have more injuries. Some have less injuries. Cole has his starts that he always had but he has his numbers back – he has his assists back, he has decisive goals back – so that is why he is in the squad.
‘I think he has a point to prove, and the same goes for Trent (Alexander-Arnold). He was never off the list. He was never non-selectable for us, and it is his chance to show, come to camp and be the best version of himself.’
Palmer has four goals and two assists in seven games this season after struggling during the last campaign through injury.
He battled thigh and hamstring problems as he returned 11 goals and three assists in 34 games, revealing on a live stream last week: ‘I had one leg for 10 months, f***ing hell, what do you want me to do?’
Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Tino Livramento and Marcus Rashford have also withdrawn from the squad.
