Tangier Med Port secured the fifth position worldwide in the 2024 Container Port Performance Index, surpassing significant ports in the Middle East and Europe. The index also noted varied outcomes for other Moroccan ports, with Casablanca ranked 288th and Agadir 297th.

The Port of Tangier Med secured the fifth position in the 2024 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), released by the World Bank in collaboration with Standard & Poor’s Global Market Intelligence. The index outlines significant developments in container port efficiency from 2020 to 2024.

The CPPI evaluated the performance of 403 container ports across the globe, utilizing a comprehensive dataset that includes more than 175,000 ship arrivals and over 247 million container movements. A port’s efficiency is mainly determined by the total time a ship remains berthed, which serves as a key measure of the dependability and robustness of international trade.

China’s Yangshan Port was ranked first, followed by Fuzhou, Egypt’s Port Said, and Dalian. Tangier Med took fifth position, surpassing significant ports like Qatar’s Hamad Port and Spain’s Algeciras Port, which came in 20th.

Two additional Moroccan ports were included in the ranking: Casablanca, ranked 288th, and Agadir, at 297th. In contrast, other Maghreb ports were positioned much lower: Béjaïa in Algeria (386th), Rades in Tunisia (251st), and Qasr Ahmed and Khoms in Libya (284th and 321st respectively). Mauritania’s Nouakchott Port was listed at 314th.

The fifth edition of the report highlighted a worldwide decrease in port efficiency from 2020 to 2024, influenced by events like the Red Sea shipping crisis, challenges at the Panama Canal, and ongoing impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. It also mentioned inconsistent progress in efficiency, with East Asian ports experiencing significant enhancements, South Asia demonstrating signs of recovery, and ports in North America and Europe sustaining stable performance close to 2023 levels.
