People visiting Wales’ biggest lake are being advised to exercise caution following the discovery of dangerous algae in the water.

Blue-green algae was found in areas of Llyn Tegid in Bala, Gwynedd, within Eryri National Park, according to reports.

The officials have advised individuals to exercise caution near the lake and refrain from direct interaction with the algae.

Blue-green algae is a collection of microscopic organismswhich are naturally found in lakes and rivers that may turn dangerous.

The lake attracts those who enjoy water-based activities.

People are being encouraged to read the safety information posted near the lake.

The officials stated that the blue-green algae bloom is a natural occurrence that has been present in Llyn Tegid for many years, typically appearing during warm, sunny weather, although it can occur at any time.

It can be readily recognized by the bright-green foam drifting close to the coastlines.

Blue-green algae – cyanobacteria– may thrive in warm, shallow, undisturbed, and nutrient-dense surface waters that get plenty of sunlight, resulting in floating mats or scums on the water’s surface.

Certain types of algae generate harmful substances that may lead to skin rashes, eye discomfort, nausea, diarrhea, fever, and muscle or joint pain when ingested.

Nevertheless, it is impossible to determine if a bloom is harmful just by observing its appearance.

It is harmful to humans and animals, and direct contact with, or consumption of the algae may lead to mild to serious health issues.

Dogs and farm animals are particularly susceptible to blue-green algae, and may becomeextremely or lethally sick in a short period of time.

Eryri National Park mentioned that its lake guardians closely observe water conditions, particularly during the summer months when blue-green algae blooms are most common.

If a blue-green algae bloom is detected or suspected, visible safety signs are put up around the lake, along with the permanent safety warnings that are always in place.

Prior to engaging in any water-related activities, individuals using the lake are strongly encouraged to review the safety warning and follow the provided guidance, which specifically advises against entering the water when there is a blue-green algal bloom present.

Although the bloom is typically more noticeable along the shore, the toxins may exist throughout the entire water body.
