Unguja. The Zanzibar government has reasserted its dedication to nurturing the next wave of aerospace professionals, as five local students are set to compete in an international event hosted by NASA in Oman. Khamis Abdalla Said, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, stated that the government is committed to increasing opportunities for youth in science and technology, which he highlighted as essential for Zanzibar’s future growth. He made these comments at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport while bidding farewell to the students from the Karume Institute of Science and Technology, who left yesterday for Muscat to take part in the NASA International Space Apps Challenge 2025, scheduled to be held in Ibra. Mr. Said mentioned that the students’ selection is a direct result of the government’s education sector reforms, with an emphasis on enhancing science and technology programs to develop more specialists in advanced fields. The five students secured their place in the competition after excelling in the International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC) program, a NASA-related initiative that involves learners globally in asteroid discovery. Before boarding their flight, the students expressed pride in carrying the Zanzibar flag overseas, vowing to use the opportunity to gain new insights into aerospace research and innovation. They also promised to share the knowledge and skills they acquire for the benefit of Tanzania. “This opportunity came because of our performance in the IASC program, and we are determined to make the most of it,” one student said. Just weeks earlier, the group met with Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, who praised them for their achievement and encouraged them to inspire other young Zanzibaris to pursue careers in science and technology.
